UP Vidhan Sabha Library Appreciates Book on Prisoners’ Human Rights

The Uttar Pradesh Vidhan Sabha Secretariat, Lucknow, has issued an official appreciation letter to Advocate Abhijeet Kumar Tiwari for his book titled “Human Rights of Prisoners in India (with special reference to Lucknow Jail).” The recognition was granted after the book was submitted to the Vidhan Sabha Library as a contribution.

In the letter, Librarian and Chief Documentation Officer Dilip Kumar Dubey described the book as a valuable addition to the library’s collection. He noted that it would benefit not only general readers but also researchers and legal professionals working in the field of human rights and criminal justice.

The book focuses on key challenges within India’s prison system, particularly the condition of undertrial prisoners. It highlights that a significant number of inmates in Indian jails are still awaiting trial, pointing to delays and inefficiencies in the judicial system.

Advocate Tiwari has explained the constitutional protections available to prisoners under Articles 21, 14, and 22 of the Indian Constitution. By referring to important Supreme Court judgments and legal provisions, the book emphasizes that prisoners are entitled to dignity and fundamental rights, regardless of their legal status.

With special reference to Lucknow Jail, the book examines issues such as overcrowding, limited infrastructure, and administrative pressures. It also suggests reforms, including better legal aid, mental health support, education, and skill development initiatives for inmates.

The recognition of this work reflects the importance of research-based contributions in raising awareness about prisoners’ rights. It also underlines the need for a more humane and efficient criminal justice system in India, where reform and rehabilitation are given equal importance alongside punishment.
