The term Karva Chauth itself symbolizes love, dedication, faith, and sacrifice.
The word Karva means an earthen pot and Chauth refers to the fourth day of the Kartik month. This day holds immense importance for married women. On this holy occasion, women fast from sunrise to moonrise, without food or water, for the long life, prosperity, and well-being of their husbands.
This fast is not only a ritual but also a divine expression of faith and inner strength. The festival teaches us selfless love and unwavering devotion.
- The Origin and Historical Background of Karva Chauth
Karva Chauth has been celebrated since ancient times. According to legends, when men used to go for months on military campaigns or long journeys, their wives prayed for their safety and long life.
Women would form friendships with other women — known as god-sisters — and offer prayers together for their husbands’ well-being.
One of the most famous legends is of Queen Veeravati, whose brother deceived her into breaking her fast before moonrise. As a result, her husband died. When she realized the truth, she observed the fast again with full devotion, and her husband’s life was restored.
Since then, this fast has been considered powerful and sacred.
- The Rituals of Karva Chauth (Worship Procedure)
The fast is observed with deep faith and sincerity, following traditional customs.
(a) Preparations and Morning Rituals
Before sunrise, women eat sargi — food items like fruits, sweets, and dry fruits, often sent by their mothers-in-law. After sunrise, they abstain from food and water until moonrise.
(b) Afternoon Activities
Women spend the day listening to the story (Katha) of Karva Chauth, singing devotional songs, dressing up beautifully, and preparing for the evening worship.
(c) Evening Worship
In the evening, women sit in a circle, decorate their Karvas (clay pots), and offer prayers to Goddess Parvati and Lord Shiva for their husband’s long life. They light lamps and worship the moon when it rises, viewing it through a sieve, and then see their husband’s face, marking the completion of the fast.
Legends and Beliefs
There are various mythological references to Karva Chauth. One legend tells of Draupadi, who kept this fast during the Mahabharata period for Arjuna’s safety. Lord Krishna himself explained the importance of the fast to her.
Another belief associates the fast with the story of Savitri and Satyavan, where Savitri’s devotion brought her husband back from the clutches of death.
