JAMMU, November 3, 2026: Bringing students together through the joy of reading and meaningful conversations, the Literary Club of the University of Jammu organised the second session of its group reading initiative, ‘Kitabnama’, at the Padma Sachdev Sur Samvad Rangsthal.
Organised under the aegis of Utsaah, the session was dedicated to renowned Russian writer Leo Tolstoy, marking his death anniversary month. The discussion centred on his celebrated short story How Much Land Does a Man Need?, which explores human greed, material desires and the endless pursuit of wealth.
The programme witnessed participation from students representing various departments of the University. Prof. Meena Sharma, Convener, Utsaah, welcomed the gathering, including the Chief Guest, Dr. Naseeb Singh Manhas, an eminent writer and former Director of Doordarshan, along with faculty members and students.
The session began with a reading of Tolstoy’s story by a student narrator, followed by an open discussion in which participants shared their interpretations and perspectives. Students reflected on the story’s central theme, drawing parallels between the protagonist’s desire to acquire more land and the materialistic aspirations often seen in contemporary society.
Addressing the gathering, Dr. Naseeb Singh Manhas appreciated the Literary Club’s continued efforts to encourage literary activities among students. He spoke about the lasting relevance of classic literature in understanding society and human relationships, while encouraging young people to develop a regular habit of reading and writing and to engage with literature through critical thinking.
The interactive format allowed students to move beyond conventional classroom discussions and experience literature as a shared activity built around ideas, reflection and dialogue.
Prof. Sadaf Shah, Coordinator, Literary Club, delivered the formal vote of thanks, expressing gratitude to the Chief Guest, faculty members and students for their participation and support.
Through ‘Kitabnama’, the Literary Club aims to nurture reading habits among students and create a common platform where literature can encourage critical thinking, intellectual exchange and meaningful conversations.
The initiative also reflects the University’s continued efforts to strengthen the culture of reading and literary engagement on campus.
