From Banker to Marathon Legend: The Inspiring Journey of Nixon Joseph

Nixon Joseph, popularly known as SBI’s Marathon Legend, transformed himself from a career banker into an accomplished marathon runner after the age of 45. His inspiring journey, marked by professional excellence, social impact leadership, and remarkable fitness achievements, continues to motivate people across India.

In a world where age is often seen as a limitation and desk jobs are associated with sedentary lifestyles, Nixon Joseph stands as a remarkable example of how determination, discipline, and purpose can redefine human potential. Popularly known as “SBI’s Marathon Legend,” Joseph’s journey from a career banker to an accomplished marathon runner continues to inspire thousands across India.

A postgraduate in English Language and Literature, Nixon Joseph joined the State Bank of India in 1985 as a Probationary Officer. Over the next three and a half decades, he built an illustrious banking career, serving in diverse roles across Corporate Credit, Retail Banking, International Banking, and Operations. He had international assignments at SBI Bahrain and SBI Tokyo, where he served as Chief Executive Officer.

Yet, what makes his story truly extraordinary is not just his professional success but his transformation into a long-distance runner. Having never been an athlete in his youth, Joseph began marathon running at the age of 45—an age when many consider slowing down. Defying conventional expectations, he went on to complete an astounding 74 full marathons, each covering 42.195 kilometres. His relentless commitment to fitness and perseverance earned him recognition as a Fit India Ambassador and a place in the prestigious Tata Mumbai Marathon Legends Club.

Beyond personal achievement, Joseph has dedicated his life to creating social impact. As President and Chief Operating Officer of SBI Foundation, he championed numerous initiatives focused on sustainability, social development, inclusion, and support for underprivileged communities. He played a pivotal role in advancing projects aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals and was instrumental in promoting green banking and carbon credit policies within SBI.

His contributions have been widely acknowledged through several prestigious honours, including the Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam Award for Excellence in Public Service. He has also been recognised as an SDG Ambassador and continues to serve as a mentor, speaker, social impact auditor, and advisor to various institutions and non-profit organisations.

Today, as Group Executive Director of DEVI Sansthan, Lucknow, Nixon Joseph continues to lead FLN initiatives in Government schools across India. His life story is a powerful reminder that success is not defined by age, profession, or circumstances, but by the courage to embrace new challenges and the determination to keep moving forward—one step at a time.
