Mehsana, Gujarat: Gujarat is home to several ancient temples that reflect India’s rich spiritual and cultural heritage, and among them, the Shri Bahusmarna Mata Temple in Kanoda village, Mehsana district, continues to hold a special place for devotees and historians alike.
During the temple’s 136th Patotsav, noted scholar and historian Dr. Jignesh Jani highlighted the shrine’s remarkable history, architectural significance, and its centuries-old association with the Audichya Sahastra Brahmin community.
Held on the auspicious occasion of Vaishakh Shukla Shashthi, the annual celebration brought together devotees from different regions, reaffirming the temple’s importance as both a sacred pilgrimage destination and a symbol of Gujarat’s living heritage.
What Is the Historical Significance of Shri Bahusmarna Mata Temple?
According to Dr. Jignesh Jani, the temple’s origins are closely connected with the reign of King Mulraj Solanki, the founder of Gujarat’s renowned Solanki dynasty.
Historical traditions suggest that the king invited Audichya Brahmins from northern India to settle across Gujarat, where they were entrusted with preserving Vedic traditions, performing sacred rituals, and strengthening the foundations of Sanatan Dharma.
Over the centuries, Maa Bahusmarna came to be revered as the Kuldevi of the Audichya Sahastra Brahmin community, particularly among families belonging to the Upamanyu Gotra. Even today, the temple remains one of the community’s most respected centres of faith and devotion.
A Heritage Site That Reflects Gujarat’s Architectural Excellence
Located on the banks of the Rupen River, Kanoda was once recognised as a flourishing centre of religion, culture and architecture. Historians believe the region was home to magnificent Hindu and Jain temples, intricately designed stepwells and remarkable stone structures that reflected the artistic brilliance of the medieval Solanki period.
Although parts of the original Bahusmarna Mata Temple were damaged over time, much of its architectural identity has been preserved through careful restoration. Rather than replacing the ancient structure, the local community retained and reused original stone elements, allowing the temple to maintain its historical character while continuing to serve as a vibrant place of worship.
Visitors can still admire beautifully carved pillars, intricately sculpted ceilings, decorative motifs, and detailed stone craftsmanship that showcase the exceptional temple architecture for which Gujarat’s Solanki era is widely celebrated.
136th Patotsav Celebrated with Devotion and Community Spirit
The temple’s 136th Patotsav was marked by religious ceremonies and community participation that reflected the deep faith of devotees. Rituals including the Navchandi Yajna, Maha Aarti, Vedic prayers and traditional devotional programmes formed an integral part of the celebrations.
One of the major highlights was the Preeti Bhoj, where more than 1,000 devotees participated, demonstrating the strong community spirit associated with the temple. Dr. Jignesh Jani noted that the successful organisation of the event was made possible through the dedicated efforts of the Temple Trust, volunteers and residents of Kanoda village.
A Temple That Continues to Inspire Devotees
For generations, devotees have worshipped Maa Bahusmarna as a symbol of wisdom, peace, prosperity and spiritual strength. Many believe that seeking the blessings of the Goddess brings inner peace, clarity of thought, harmony within families and guidance during life’s challenges.
Beyond its religious significance, the temple also serves as a cultural institution that preserves traditions passed down through generations, helping younger members of the community remain connected to their heritage.
A Legacy of Dedicated Leadership and Service
While reflecting on the temple’s journey, Dr. Jignesh Jani acknowledged the longstanding dedication of several individuals whose selfless service has contributed significantly to the preservation and growth of Shri Bahusmarna Mata Temple.
He paid tribute to his father, Late Shri Ramanlal Jani, who devoted many years of service as both Secretary and Vice President of the Temple Trust, contributing significantly to its administration and development. Dr. Jani also acknowledged the leadership of Shri Pareshbhai Jani, who has served as the President of the Temple Trust for many years, providing consistent vision, guidance and direction in the Trust’s religious, administrative and heritage conservation initiatives.
