The Lawyer Who Chose People Over Prestige – Dr. Ifra Nasir

By Rahul Dev Dogra

Some dreams don’t wait for the “right age” — they start early and stay alive. For Dr. Ifra Nasir, the dream of becoming a lawyer began in her childhood in Srinagar. While other kids spoke about becoming doctors or engineers, she confidently said, “I want to be a lawyer.”
For her, it wasn’t just a career — it was a purpose.

After completing her schooling in Srinagar, she moved to Jammu for higher studies, earning her MA and LLM, followed by an Honorary Doctorate in Human Rights. But she believes degrees mean little unless they help someone who truly needs support.

Unlike many, she began her professional journey through her own independent legal practice in 2017. No backing, no shortcuts — just hard work. In 2021, her dedication earned her an appointment as a Panel Lawyer with the District Legal Services Authority (DLSA). Recently, in November 2025, she received an Appreciation Certificate from the Chairman of DLSA on Legal Services Day for her remarkable service.

But Dr. Ifra’s work goes beyond courtrooms. She strongly believes that justice starts with awareness. She has conducted hundreds of legal awareness programs in schools, colleges, NGOs, and local communities. Through All India Radio and Doordarshan, she has explained complex laws in simple language so every citizen can understand their rights.

Her journey hasn’t been easy. She openly shares her struggles, including a difficult phase of depression. But every setback made her stronger. Her resilience has earned her awards like the Youngest Advocate Award and Excellence in Law Award.

At just 30, she inspires many young people, especially women. Her message is simple:
“Trust your voice. Be stronger than your fears.”

Looking ahead, she dreams of reaching the remotest villages of J&K with free legal aid and awareness.

Dr. Ifra Nasir is living proof that one determined person can bring justice closer — one case, one family, one voice at a time.
