From Stage to Screen: Anshu Bhatacharji’s Journey from Theatre Mentor to Independent Filmmaker

By Special Correspondent

After dedicating more than 17 years to theatre and actor training, Anshu Bhatacharji has taken a significant step into independent filmmaking with ‘Murder of My Wife #Life’. Built on the foundation of Cadence Theatre Mumbai, the project reflects his commitment to nurturing new talent and demonstrating how theatre can successfully transition into cinema.

Mumbai: For over 17 years, Anshu Bhatacharji has built his reputation as an actor, director, mentor and founder of Cadence Theatre Mumbai, training thousands of aspiring performers while promoting theatre as the foundation of meaningful acting. Before pursuing the performing arts full-time, he built a successful 17-year corporate career as an ex-banker before making a career-defining shift towards theatre.

His latest milestone comes with Murder of My Wife #Life, an original production written by long-time Cadence collaborator Deepak Kumar. Following a successful stage performance, Anshu proposed transforming the same production into an independent feature film using the same cast immediately after the theatrical run, an approach that required extensive planning and collective commitment.

Despite the challenges commonly associated with independent filmmaking, including limited resources and demanding production schedules, the project moved forward with support from theatre colleagues and industry professionals. The production reflects Cadence Theatre Mumbai’s emphasis on teamwork, discipline and original storytelling.

One of the film’s notable features is its cast, comprising largely newcomers personally trained by Anshu through theatre before making their transition to cinema. The film continues the organisation’s mission of creating opportunities for emerging actors while encouraging performance-driven filmmaking.

Anshu also plays one of the film’s central characters. Following three private screenings that received encouraging audience responses, the team is now preparing the film for its OTT release.

Rather than adapting a stage play long after its theatrical success, Murder of My Wife #Life evolved directly from live theatre into cinema while retaining the emotional intensity and performance discipline developed on stage. According to Anshu, the project represents the beginning of Cadence Theatre Mumbai’s broader vision of building an entertainment company rooted in theatre, original storytelling and meaningful cinema.
