The Z-Morh Tunnel, a 6.5-kilometer strategic link on the Srinagar-Leh highway, is ready for public use but is awaiting formal approval from New Delhi for its inauguration. The tunnel, constructed by APCO Amarnathji Tunnelway Pvt Ltd, reached its Commercial Operation Date on July 24, 2024, nearly six months ago. Despite the completion of this ₹2,400 crore project, officials are still waiting for the official go-ahead to open it to the public.
A source close to the matter mentioned that Prime Minister Narendra Modi might inaugurate the tunnel later this month, although no official date has been confirmed yet.
“The Z-Morh Tunnel is fully prepared for public access, but we are still waiting for formal approval from New Delhi. We hope to receive the green light soon,” an official stated. He added that the tunnel could significantly boost tourism and ease travel difficulties, especially during harsh winters. “It’s frustrating that it’s not open yet despite being ready for months. This is crucial for our local economy and daily commuting,” he said.
Built under a build-operate-transfer (BOT) model, the Z-Morh Tunnel is expected to improve connectivity between Sonamarg, a popular tourist destination, and the rest of Jammu & Kashmir. Situated at an altitude of 8,500 feet, the tunnel will provide all-weather access and enhance military logistics to Ladakh, a region vital for national security.
Initially planned by the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) in 2012, the construction was later managed by the National Highways & Infrastructure Development Corporation Ltd (NHIDCL). Although originally scheduled for completion in October 2024, the tunnel was recently opened on an emergency basis to clear traffic stranded due to heavy snowfall and slippery conditions on the highway.
The Z-Morh Tunnel is expected to play a key role in ensuring safer, year-round connectivity for both civilians and military operations, eliminating snow-related disruptions that often block the Srinagar-Leh highway.
