A Delhi Court granted former JNU scholar Umar Khalid interim bail in relation to the UAPA case concerning a broader conspiracy connected to the 2020 North-East Delhi riots.
Additional Sessions Judge Sameer Bajpai of the Karkardooma Courts allowed Khalid to be out on bail for seven days so he can attend a family wedding. The conditions of the interim bail require Khalid not to communicate with any witnesses or individuals associated with the case and to refrain from using social media during this period.
He is only permitted to meet family, relatives, and friends, and must stay at home or at the venues of the wedding ceremonies. Khalid is required to report back to the concerned Jail Superintendent by the evening of January 3, 2025.
The Delhi High Court previously denied him bail in October 2022 and later withdrew his Special Leave Petition to the Supreme Court. A second plea for regular bail filed in the trial court was rejected earlier this year, and his appeal against this decision is currently pending before the Delhi High Court.
The FIR 59 of 2020 was filed by the Special Cell of Delhi Police and includes various charges under the Indian Penal Code of 1860 and the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act of 1967.
Other individuals implicated in the case include Tahir Hussain, Khalid Saifi, Isharat Jahan, Meeran Haider, Gulfisha Fatima, Shifa-Ur-Rehman, Asif Iqbal Tanha, Shadab Ahmed, Tasleem Ahmed, Saleem Malik, Mohd. Saleem Khan, Athar Khan, Safoora Zargar, Sharjeel Imam, Faizan Khan, and Natasha Narwal.
