The Karnataka government has declared a public holiday for all government offices, schools, and colleges, including aided institutions, on Wednesday, December 11, in memory of former Chief Minister SM Krishna.
The state will observe a three-day mourning period from December 10 to 12. During this time, the national flag will be flown at half-mast at all government facilities, and no cultural or entertainment activities will be organized by the government.
SM Krishna, who passed away on December 10 at the age of 92, was instrumental in establishing Bengaluru as India’s Silicon Valley.
He died early Tuesday at 2:45 AM, and his cremation will be held with full state honors on Wednesday in his native Mandya.
In recognition of his extensive political career, SM Krishna was honored with the Padma Vibhushan, India’s second-highest civilian award, in 2023.
He was born in Somanahalli, Mandya district, on May 1, 1932, and also held positions as the Governor of Maharashtra and Speaker of the Karnataka Assembly.
