On December 20 in New Delhi, the Rajya Sabha passed a motion by voice vote to appoint 12 of its members to a joint committee of Parliament tasked with reviewing two bills that propose simultaneous elections.
Following an initial adjournment in the morning, Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar requested Union Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal to present the motion for nomination. While presenting the motion, Meghwal stated that the Upper House of Parliament has resolved to nominate 12 members to the committee.
The Rajya Sabha nominees include Ghanshyam Tiwari, Bhubaneshwar Kalita, Dr. K. Laxman, and Kavita Patidar from the BJP, Sanjay Kumar Jha from the JD(U), Randeep Singh Surjewala and Mukul Wasnik from the Congress, Saket Gokhale from the TMC, P. Wilson from the DMK, Sanjay Singh from the AAP, Manas Ranjan Mangaraj from the BJD, and V. Vijaisai Reddy from the YSRCP.
Just before the Lok Sabha concluded its session, it passed a resolution recommending the two bills regarding simultaneous elections to a joint committee of Parliament. The committee will consist of 27 members from the Lok Sabha and 12 from the Rajya Sabha.
Notable members from the Lok Sabha on the committee include former Union ministers Anurag Thakur and P. P. Chaudhary from the BJP, along with Priyanka Gandhi Vadra from the Congress.
The two “one nation one election” (ONOE) bills, one of which requires a Constitutional amendment, outline the process for conducting simultaneous elections and were introduced in the Lok Sabha after an intense debate.
