Srinagar 06 March – The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) held a protest on Thursday to express their anger over disrespectful comments made about the July 13 Martyrs during a recent meeting in the Legislative Assembly. The protest, led by Iltija Mufti, ended at Polo View in Srinagar, where she spoke to supporters and the media.
July 13, 1931, is an important date in Jammu and Kashmir’s history, marking the start of the region’s fight for democracy. Iltija Mufti highlighted the sacrifices made by the people of Jammu and Kashmir in their struggle, noting that their fight was against a local ruler, which makes it different from the national struggle.
Iltija thanked Speaker Abdul Rahim Rather for removing the offensive comments from the Assembly records. However, she called for an unconditional apology from BJP leader Sunil Sharma, accusing the BJP of twisting historical facts for political gain. “The BJP is trying to change history for their own agenda. If they truly respect Maharaja Hari Singh, why did they take away Jammu and Kashmir’s state flag, its constitution, and the special status he negotiated during the accession?” she asked.
The PDP also repeated its demand to make July 13 a public holiday, claiming that the current BJP-led government is trying to erase Jammu and Kashmir’s history. The party believes it is important to honor the sacrifices of the martyrs to preserve the region’s identity.
As tensions rise over historical issues and political representation in Jammu and Kashmir, the PDP’s protest highlights the ongoing fight for recognition and respect for the region’s past. The party remains committed to advocating for the rights and history of the people of Jammu and Kashmir.
