Owais Ahmad, the CEO of Srinagar Smart City, announced on Thursday that over 1,000 cameras have been installed throughout the city as part of the Intelligent Traffic Management System (ITMS) to reduce traffic violations.
He explained to reporters that these cameras are set up to catch various traffic offenses, such as not wearing seatbelts or helmets, using mobile phones while driving, and running red lights.
In the coming days, the system will also monitor speed violations. On the first day of operation, about 102 challans were issued. When a vehicle’s number plate is captured, a challan is automatically generated, and the driver must pay it.
Currently, ITMS is fully working at 33 out of 66 junctions. Due to some technical issues, the remaining signals are not yet operational. Efforts are being made to fix these problems gradually, with full functionality expected soon.
The ITMS uses advanced technology like high-resolution cameras and radar sensors to watch intersections and highways. By collecting real-time data and analyzing it with computer algorithms, ITMS provides quick insights into traffic violations and patterns.
