Srinagar, Nov. 04: Tensions flared in the Legislative Assembly on Monday as PDP MLA Waheed ur Rehman Para presented a motion calling for the reinstatement of Article 370, a move that sparked considerable unrest among the members.
During his address, Para began by congratulating the newly elected Speaker, expressing confidence that his experience would greatly benefit the assembly’s proceedings. He then proceeded to present a resolution on behalf of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), which demanded the restoration of Article 370, a provision that granted special status to Jammu and Kashmir until its revocation in 2019.
As Para spoke, chaos erupted within the House. BJP legislators quickly rallied against the motion, vocally urging the Speaker to dismiss it outright. Their opposition was immediate and fervent, reflecting the deep political divisions surrounding the issue of Article 370.
In response to the uproar, Speaker Rather sought to restore order, asserting his authority over the proceedings. “This is my domain, let me analyze this and I will decide on the resolution appropriately,” he stated, attempting to calm the escalating tensions between the opposing camps.
Despite his efforts, the situation did not improve. The 28 BJP lawmakers remained resolute in their stance, refusing to take their seats and continuing to voice their objections. The atmosphere in the assembly remained charged, highlighting the contentious nature of Jammu and Kashmir’s political landscape and the ongoing debates surrounding its constitutional status.
As discussions continued, it became clear that the issue of Article 370 remains a flashpoint for political conflict in the region, reflecting broader national tensions and differing visions for the future of Jammu and Kashmir. The assembly session underscored the challenges that lie ahead in reconciling these opposing viewpoints.
