Microsoft has begun testing a new feature that facilitates easy file sharing between iPhones and Windows PCs. This update, currently available to Windows Insiders, is part of ongoing enhancements to the company’s Phone Link application.
This feature enables users to transfer files between iPhones running iOS 16 or newer and Windows 10 or 11 computers when connected through the Phone Link and Link to Windows applications.
It represents a step forward in Microsoft’s efforts to improve Phone Link for both iOS and Android devices, which has faced challenges due to Apple’s operating system restrictions. In recent years, Microsoft has made notable progress with Phone Link, including the introduction of iMessage sending and receiving capabilities last year, albeit with certain limitations.
For example, the integration is restricted to one-on-one chats and does not support group conversations. Additionally, the app must remain open to send or receive messages, relying on Bluetooth and system notifications to navigate Apple’s stringent operating system rules. In contrast to its Android version, the iOS iteration of Phone Link lacks app mirroring and advanced integration features, making it less flexible.
However, the new file sharing functionality is a significant enhancement for cross-platform interaction.
