Baramulla, Dec 13: On Friday, students from Government Medical College (GMC) Baramulla held a protest against recent changes to the reservation policy and the decrease in open merit seats for NEET PG admissions.
The demonstrators demanded the enforcement of SRO 49 and the repeal of Rule 17, asserting that these modifications threaten merit-based admissions and the prospects of deserving candidates.
The students criticized the effects of SO 176 and SO 305, along with Rule 17 of the Jammu and Kashmir Reservation Rules, claiming these changes have significantly reduced the number of open merit seats. “Previously, 75% of PG seats were reserved for open merit candidates under SRO 49 of 2018.
Now, this figure has plummeted to just 27-30%,” a protester stated. This year, only 78 out of 293 PG seats in government medical colleges were available to candidates under the open merit category.
