SRINAGAR, Dec 18: Kashmir experienced severe cold wave conditions today, with temperatures dropping significantly below freezing. In Srinagar, the temperature reached minus 5.3 degrees Celsius, a decrease from minus 3.4 degrees Celsius the night before.
The maximum temperature in the city was recorded at 9.9 degrees Celsius, which is 0.5 degrees above normal.
Gulmarg, a popular skiing destination, saw a low of minus 4 degrees Celsius, consistent with the previous night, while its maximum temperature was 6.5 degrees Celsius, 1.7 degrees above normal. Pahalgam recorded a lower temperature of minus 6.8 degrees Celsius, down from minus 5 degrees Celsius the night before, with a maximum of 10.8 degrees Celsius, exceeding normal by 3.2 degrees.
Konibal, near Pampore, was the coldest location in the Valley at minus 8.5 degrees Celsius. Qazigund’s minimum temperature settled at minus 6 degrees Celsius, with the maximum at 10.2 degrees, slightly above normal by 0.4 degrees. Kupwara recorded a low of minus 5.6 degrees Celsius and a maximum of 10.3 degrees Celsius, up by 0.9 degrees from normal.
Kokernag observed a minimum of minus 5.7 degrees Celsius, with a maximum of 7.9 degrees, which is 0.4 degrees below normal.
The meteorological office has predicted primarily dry weather until December 26, with a chance of light snowfall in the higher areas on the night of December 21-22. Many water supply lines in the city and surrounding regions have frozen due to the low temperatures.
