The Railway Ministry plans to create a new division with its headquarters in Jammu, under the Northern Railway Zone. This will be done by reorganizing the Firozpur division.
According to a letter from the ministry dated January 1, 2025, the new Jammu division will include five sections: Pathankot-Jammu-Udhampur (now named after martyr Captain Tushar Mahajan), Srinagar-Baramula, Bhogpur Sirwal-Pathankot, Batala (excluding)-Pathankot, and Pathankot-Joginder Nagar. Together, these sections will cover 742.1 km.
The exact boundaries of the division will be decided after a Detailed Project Report (DPR) is completed.
The ministry wants the Jammu division office to be modern and make full use of information technology.
They also want the division to have a simple organizational setup. All the necessary jobs for the new division will come from existing positions in Northern Railway.
The ministry has requested a Detailed Project Report soon to understand what infrastructure and staff are needed for the new division.
Currently, there are 68 rail divisions in 17 railway zones. Jammu will become the 69th division.
