Jammu and Kashmir – The Health Department of Jammu and Kashmir said on Wednesday that there is no need to worry about the recent cases of human metapneumovirus (HMPV) found in the country. Officials assured the public that they are ready to handle any situation that may arise.
To prepare for any possible outbreak, the department has set up special medical ICU wards at Gandhinagar Hospital. A health department officer stated, “There is no need to panic. We are fully prepared to deal with any situation.”
Doctors explained that HMPV is not a new virus and is not causing a major outbreak. Dr. Hamid Zargar, the Medical Superintendent of Gandhinagar Hospital, said, “This is a mild respiratory illness. So far, only six cases have been reported in the South. There is no reason to be alarmed.”
The administration has held meetings to review the situation and ensure that healthcare facilities are ready. Dr. Zargar mentioned that a meeting was held recently to stress the importance of being prepared. “Our oxygen plant is working well, and we have set up a special ICU ward in case of a pandemic,” he added.
The new ICU ward has eight beds, ventilators, and a constant supply of oxygen. “The ward is heated, and we have made all necessary preparations,” Dr. Zargar explained.
HMPV is a common virus that has been around since the 1970s and usually causes mild cold-like symptoms. Experts say it can affect children and older adults more seriously, so they advise people to be aware of any warning signs.
In addition to the special ICU ward, Gandhinagar Hospital has 100 beds with oxygen support and enough oxygen concentrators and cylinders. Dr. Zargar emphasized that they are well-prepared to keep the public safe.
While HMPV cases have been reported in cities like Mumbai, Bengaluru, and Nagpur, health experts say the situation is under control and encourage the public to stay calm and informed.
