Bandipora serves as the administrative center of the Bandipore district in the union territory of Jammu and Kashmir, India. It is situated on the northern shore of Wullar Lake, which is the second-largest freshwater lake in Asia. Additionally, the highest mountain in the Kashmir Valley, Mount Harmukh, is found in Bandipora. The area features a terraced garden that resembles the famous Nishat Bagh in Srinagar. Surrounded by mountains on three sides and Wular Lake on the fourth, Bandipora’s name is believed to have originated from several sources: either from “Bund of Wular” as Bund e pur, from local folk bands (bāṇd) as Baand e pur, or from its enclosed geographical setting as Bandh e pur.
