Srinagar: India’s SRINAGAR — At least nine people have been injured in a grenade strike at a busy marketplace in the main city of Indian-controlled Kashmir.
The Sunday attack follows the death of a suspected extremist in a daylong gunfight in Srinagar, which is unusual in the heavily guarded city. In Srinagar’s main business district, where thousands of people attend the Sunday flea market, police claimed an unidentified assailant threw a grenade from a flyover bridge, reportedly targeting a paramilitary vehicle stationed there.
Similar grenade assaults have previously been attributed by Indian authorities to rebels battling against Indian sovereignty in the disputed region. In response, rebels have charged that government agents were responsible for the attacks in order to discredit their movement.
