Beijing has denied claims that a Chinese state-sponsored group hacked the US Treasury Department. The US says hackers got in through a third-party cybersecurity provider and accessed some workstations and documents.
China’s foreign ministry called these accusations “groundless” and said they oppose all hacking. They believe these claims are made for political reasons.
The US Treasury found out about the breach from the cybersecurity provider and is working with law enforcement to understand what happened. They have taken the compromised service offline and say there’s no evidence the hackers still have access.
The Treasury believes a Chinese advanced persistent threat (APT) actor was behind the attack. An APT is when hackers secretly enter a system and stay undetected for a long time.
The Treasury hasn’t shared many details yet but will provide more information later. They take threats to their systems very seriously.
Many countries, including the US, have accused China of hacking governments, militaries, and businesses. China denies these allegations and says they fight against cyber-attacks.
In recent years, the US has dismantled several hacking networks they say were backed by China. For example, in 2023, Microsoft reported that Chinese hackers breached email accounts of some US government agencies.
