Jammu, Dec 16: On Monday, the Army’s northern command held wreath-laying ceremonies across various locations in Jammu and Kashmir, as well as Ladakh, to commemorate Vijay Diwas.
This day marks India’s triumph over Pakistan in the 1971 war, which resulted in Bangladesh becoming an independent country. The Northern Command, based in Udhampur, marked the occasion with a ceremony led by General Officer Commanding-in-Chief Lt Gen M V Suchindra Kumar at the Dhruva War Memorial, according to Army reports.
Lt Gen Kumar took the time to engage with veterans, who continue to serve as an inspiration through their legacy of bravery and commitment, the Northern Command noted in a post on X.
The Jammu-based Tiger Division also observed the day at the ‘Balidan Stambh’, a war memorial in the region. This event aimed to honor the sacrifices made by the courageous soldiers during the India-Pakistan war of 1971, in which the Indian armed forces achieved victory over the Pakistan Army within just 13 days, concluding the conflict on December 16, 1971, according to a defense spokesperson.
During the event, the deputy general officer commanding of the Tiger Division laid a wreath at the memorial’s eternal flame, accompanied by a ceremonial guard of honor and other division members, the spokesperson stated. In Ladakh, the Army celebrated Vijay Diwas solemnly at the ‘Hall of Fame’ in Leh to pay tribute to the brave soldiers.
Major General Dinesh Kumar Singh, Chief of Staff of the Fire and Fury Corps, led the tribute by laying a wreath. The ceremony was attended by military personnel, junior commissioned officers, and other ranks from the Fire and Fury Corps, along with officers from the Air Force Station in Leh and other units. The event concluded with a commitment to honor the legacy of the war heroes and a determination to safeguard the nation’s sovereignty, the spokesperson added.
