A shocking robbery took place over the weekend in the Greater Kailash area of Jammu, where armed robbers stole 1.5 kilograms of gold from a jewelry store. The robbers took the store owner hostage, leading to outrage among local shopkeepers who are worried about safety in the city.
The robbery happened around 1:15 pm when two young men, dressed well and wearing helmets and dark glasses, entered Anand Jewellery Store on a motorcycle. They were armed with a sharp weapon called a “toka” and held the store owner, Prabha Anand, at knifepoint.
One of the robbers broke the display mirrors and stole around 1,500 grams of gold jewelry, including necklaces and rings, before escaping. The robbery occurred while Prabha’s husband, Kuldeep Raj, was out depositing a cheque at a bank.
Kuldeep Raj described the frightening experience, saying, “My wife was terrified because the thieves had large sharp weapons.”
After the robbery, many shopkeepers gathered in Greater Kailash to protest against the police, claiming they are not doing enough to keep them safe. This incident has raised concerns about security, especially after a recent murder that happened in broad daylight in Jammu’s Jewel Chowk area.
Raj Kumar Babbar, the President of the Swarnkar Sangh in Jammu and Kashmir, condemned the robbery, saying that the rise in crime has scared both jewelers and the public. He warned, “The recent murder and this robbery show serious problems in how the police and local government are working. If things don’t improve, the situation could get worse.”
Babbar also called for the quick arrest of the robbers and asked for weapon licenses to be given to jewelers to help protect them.
As of now, no arrests have been made. However, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Jammu, Joginder Singh, assured everyone that police teams are working hard to catch the robbers, and investigations are ongoing.
