Megha Engineering and Infrastructures Ltd. (MEIL) has successfully completed the excavation of 10.4 kilometers of the Zojila Tunnel, which stretches a total of 13 kilometers. This significant achievement marks a crucial step forward in the construction of one of the longest and most vital tunnels in the region, located along the Srinagar-Leh National Highway.
Officials from MEIL expressed their pride in overcoming the challenging mountainous terrain, highlighting the excavation as a major milestone in the project. “This accomplishment is a testament to our team’s dedication and expertise in tackling difficult conditions,” a senior official stated. “The Zojila Tunnel project is set to enhance connectivity and play a pivotal role in the development and security of the region.”
The Zojila Tunnel, being constructed using the New Austrian Tunnelling Method, is designed to provide all-weather access between Srinagar and Ladakh. Once completed, the tunnel is expected to significantly reduce travel time from the current 3.5 hours over the Zojila Pass to just 45 minutes, facilitating smoother and quicker transportation.
This enhanced connectivity is anticipated to foster economic growth and cultural exchange between the Srinagar and Ladakh regions, contributing to their overall development. The project not only aims to improve travel efficiency but also to bolster the strategic importance of the area.
As MEIL continues to make progress on the Zojila Tunnel, the completion of this ambitious infrastructure project is eagerly awaited by residents and travelers alike, promising to transform the landscape of connectivity in the region.
