Prime Minister Narendra Modi virtually inaugurated the new Jammu Railway Division on Monday, calling it a historic step in enhancing connectivity and infrastructure in Jammu and Kashmir. During the ceremony, PM Modi congratulated the people of the region, stating that integrating Jammu and Kashmir into the national railway network is a significant move towards making Indian Railways a global leader in efficiency and passenger experience.
He highlighted the Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Railway Link (USBRL) project as a testament to India’s engineering prowess. The Prime Minister mentioned the Anji Khad Bridge, India’s first cable-stayed rail bridge, and the iconic arch bridge over the Chenab River, the world’s highest railway bridge, as remarkable achievements gaining international attention.
PM Modi emphasized that the new Jammu Railway Division will benefit not only Jammu and Kashmir but also Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, and Ladakh. He described the inauguration as a symbol of collective progress under the vision of “Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas,” moving towards a developed India.
To achieve this vision, he stressed the importance of developing Indian Railways. Over the past decade, more than 30,000 kilometers of new railway tracks have been laid, with nearly complete electrification compared to just 35% in 2014. Manual crossings on broad-gauge tracks have been eliminated.
The Prime Minister noted that modernized railway divisions and stations are creating new opportunities for trade, business, and employment. He mentioned that lakhs of jobs have been generated in the railways over the last decade, and initiatives like Gati Shakti University will further enhance skills.
Highlighting advancements in high-speed train services, PM Modi pointed out that over 50 Vande Bharat trains are now operational, connecting distant regions quickly. He expressed optimism about the future of bullet trains in India.
He also praised the expansion of India’s metro network, which has grown from five cities in 2005 to 21 cities today, with over 1,000 kilometers of operational tracks.
Under the ‘Made in India’ initiative, PM Modi said railway stations are being modernized, and high-speed train corridors are being developed, ensuring India leads in connectivity and infrastructure.
He concluded by reiterating the government’s commitment to making Indian Railways the backbone of a developed and self-reliant India, focusing on connectivity, fulfilling aspirations, and creating opportunities for all citizens.
