The President of Yemen has approved the execution of Nimisha Priya, a nurse from Kerala, India, for killing a Yemeni citizen. The execution might happen within a month. Efforts to save Nimisha by paying “blood money” have not worked.
In 2017, a trial court sentenced Nimisha Priya to death for killing Talal Abdu Mahdi, a Yemeni citizen. Paying blood money was the only way to avoid the death sentence. Nimisha’s mother, Premakumari, even traveled to Yemen to apologize to Talal’s family in person. They started talks with the family, but these discussions stopped midway. Premakumari is still in Yemen.
Premakumari is currently staying at the home of Samuel Jerome, an expatriate social activist who is helping with efforts to save Nimisha. She has been there for five months.
Nimisha is married to Tommy Thomas from Thodupuzha, India. She claims that Talal promised to help her start a clinic but instead took her passport and tortured her. In response to this abuse, she attacked him.
