SRINAGAR: In Jammu and Kashmir, over one lakh vehicles have been declared unfit and classified as End-of-Life Vehicles (ELVs), according to official data.
The data shows that 110,793 transport vehicles do not have valid fitness certificates. Additionally, 154,020 non-transport vehicles are not properly registered. As of December 17, 2024, 7,742 vehicles have had their registration certificates cancelled.
According to the Motor Vehicles Rules, ELVs are vehicles that are no longer registered, declared unfit by Automated Fitness Centres, or have had their registrations cancelled. Vehicles not tested within 180 days of their last fitness test or those with expired fitness certificates also count as ELVs.
The Central Government’s rules state that these vehicles must be scrapped at Registered Vehicle Scrapping Facilities (RVSFs).
Setting up these facilities and enforcing the scrapping process will help reduce road hazards and support environmental sustainability by ensuring vehicle parts are disposed of and recycled responsibly.
