Haji Ghulam Hassan Khan, a former two-time Member of Parliament (MP) for Ladakh and retired Deputy Inspector General (DIG), passed away on Tuesday at the age of 88. He died at his home in Bathandi, Jammu.
Khan was born on December 11, 1936, in Simloo village, Batalik, in the Kargil district of Ladakh. After retiring as a DIG from the Jammu and Kashmir Police, he became an important political leader in Ladakh. He was elected to the Lok Sabha twice, first in 1999 on a National Conference ticket and then in 2009 as an independent candidate. Khan is remembered for his dedicated service and efforts to develop Ladakh.
He is survived by his wife, his son Feroz Ahmed Khan—who is a former Chief Executive Councilor of LAHDC Kargil and a current councilor—and two daughters.
Many political, social, and religious groups have expressed their condolences over his passing. CEC LAHDC Kargil Dr. Mohd Jaffer Akhoon, former chairman of the Legislative Council Haji Anayat Ali, and social-political activist Sajad Hussain Kargili have all shared their grief and offered prayers for his soul.
