Zakir Hussain, renowned as one of India’s premier classical musicians who transcended genres and brought the tabla to international audiences, passed away at the age of 73.
He died from idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, a long-term lung condition, at a hospital in San Francisco, as confirmed by his family.

Hussain was widely regarded as the foremost tabla player of his time, with a career stretching over 60 years. Throughout his journey, he collaborated with iconic artists such as George Harrison, Van Morrison, Earth, Wind and Fire, jazz saxophonist Charles Lloyd, drummer Mickey Hart, and cellist Yo-Yo Ma. Hussain was taught the tabla by his father,
the legendary Ustad Alla Rakha, starting at the age of seven. A musical prodigy, he began performing with India’s classical music legends during his teenage years.
In 1973, he formed the Indian jazz fusion group Shakti with jazz guitarist John McLaughlin, creating a unique acoustic fusion sound that blended Indian music with jazz elements for Western audiences.
In 2024, Hussain became the first Indian musician to win three Grammy Awards in a single year.
His group Shakti won the award for Best Global Music Album, while his collaboration with Edgar Meyer, Béla Fleck, and flutist Rakesh Chaurasia secured wins for Best Global Music Performance and Best Contemporary Instrumental Album.
He received his first Grammy in 2009. In 2023, Hussain was honored with the Padma Vibhushan, India’s second-highest civilian award.
Beyond his tabla performances, he also composed music for films, appeared in productions such as the Merchant Ivory film “Heat and Dust,” and became a popular face for Taj Mahal tea in India. He is survived by his wife, two daughters, a sister, and two brothers.
