December 14, 2024, Jammu: In order to voice their concerns about the recent modifications to the reservation policy for postgraduate medical seats in Jammu & Kashmir, MBBS students and concerned medical professionals organized a nonviolent demonstration at ASCOMS Jammu today.
The main issues of dispute are:
1. SRO 49 (2018) Reversal: In order to guarantee that merit continues to be the determining factor in specialty courses, candidates call for the restoration of the 75% Open Merit (OM) and 25% reservation policy.
2. Rule 17 should be abolished because it unfairly gives reserved category students two places, thus limiting OM possibilities.
3. Bond System Implementation: To address regional healthcare shortages without sacrificing merit, a service bond with a duration of three to five years is recommended.
The demonstration highlighted the negative effects of lowering the OM limit to 26.6% and the ways in which such regulations compromise proficiency in specialized medical specialties. Protesters demanded prompt action to restore equity and guarantee the provision of high-quality medical treatment.
