In a jab at Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh remarked that it’s typical for certain Opposition leaders to carry copies of the Indian Constitution with them.
“Nowadays, numerous Opposition leaders carry copies of the Constitution with them. This has been their observation since childhood… It’s a tradition they’ve witnessed in their families for generations, where keeping the Constitution in their pockets has been the norm,” Singh remarked while starting the discussion on the 75th anniversary of the Indian Constitution’s adoption in the Lok Sabha on Friday.
Rahul Gandhi and various Congress leaders have been showcasing red-covered editions of the Constitution during their campaign efforts in recent elections, particularly for the 2024 Lok Sabha polls. They have been criticizing the BJP-led NDA for aiming for 400 seats with the intention of altering the Constitution.
In the Lok Sabha today, Rajnath Singh referenced prominent Congress figures—Jawaharlal Nehru, Indira Gandhi, and Rajiv Gandhi—asserting that they often utilized the Constitution to promote their political agendas. He emphasized that for the BJP, the Constitution is a revered and sacred text, while for the Congress, it is merely something to be stored away for convenience.
“Our dedication to the Constitution is evident. We have always respected institutional independence. For us, constitutional principles are not mere showcases; they are demonstrated through our actions.”
