The BJP-led central government criticized the opposition on Tuesday for filing a no-confidence notice against Rajya Sabha Chairman and Vice-President Jagdeep Dhankhar, labeling it a mere distraction tactic.
The INDIA bloc brought forward the motion, alleging that Dhankhar demonstrated bias and acted in a partisan manner, claiming he favored the ruling party during parliamentary proceedings and silenced their voices.
Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju condemned the Congress-led INDIA bloc for undermining the dignity of the parliamentary chair during the ongoing winter session.
He expressed disapproval of the thirty MPs who signed the notice and emphasized their disrespect toward the Chairs of both the Rajya Sabha and Lok Sabha. Rijiju stated, “The NDA holds the majority in Rajya Sabha.
The notice will face rejection, and we will ensure that such actions will not receive tolerance.” He praised Vice-President Dhankhar, highlighting his modest background and commitment to the welfare of farmers and the public, asserting their respect and confidence in his leadership.
Opposition Unites to Challenge Vice President: 60 MPs Sign Notice in Historic Move
However, his conduct on Monday prompted them to proceed with the motion. Although the ruling party’s strength likely means the no-confidence motion will face defeat, Ramesh declared that the motion formally submitted served “the interest of parliamentary democracy.”
According to Article 67 (b), the motion for the Vice President’s removal requires a 14-day notice and must receive approval from the Deputy Chairman before discussion, meaning the motion might only face consideration in the next session as the winter session concludes on December 20.
In the past, similar notices for removing Lok Sabha Speakers had filed, but no motions have targeted the Vice President.
Historical attempts against Lok Sabha Speakers include motions against G V Mavalankar in December 1954, Hukam Singh in November 1966, and Balram Jakhar in April 1987, with past motions either facing rejection or negation due to lack of support.
Both the Rajya Sabha and Lok Sabha have experienced ongoing disruptions during the winter session, with the BJP increasing its criticism of Congress for alleged ties to “anti-India” financier George Soros, while Congress continued its criticism of Prime Minister Modi’s government on various issues.
The notice filed amid chaos in both Houses followed accusations by the BJP regarding Congress leaders allegedly collaborating with Soros to undermine the nation. Consequently, both Houses adjourned within an hour.
