Apple has ambitious plans for its anticipated custom modems. Reports from Bloomberg indicate that the company intends to integrate these chips into not just iPhones and iPads, but also Macs and potentially future versions of the Vision Pro.
However, Macs featuring cellular capabilities are not expected to launch until 2026, around the same time Bloomberg predicts Apple will release its more advanced second-generation modem. Additionally, there are discussions of incorporating the 5G chip into a pair of augmented reality glasses, which are considered to be several years away.
Currently, Apple provides cellular options for iPhones, iPads, and Apple Watches. There are indications that Apple might introduce its custom modem in the iPhone SE next year, followed by lower-end iPads and a new iPhone model that is expected to be 2mm slimmer than the iPhone 16 Pro, according to Bloomberg.
Over the next three years, Apple is also anticipated to gradually introduce its second-generation modem into high-end iPhones and iPads, moving away from Qualcomm’s modems.
