President Joe Biden criticized the placement of thousands of North Korean soldiers in Russia during his meeting with Chinese leader Xi Jinping in Lima, Peru, according to a statement from the White House. This meeting marked the third encounter between the two presidents following their telephone conversation on April 2, 2024, the statement added. The leaders engaged in an open and constructive dialogue on a variety of bilateral, regional, and global matters, covering both areas of cooperation and differences.
“Building upon a transparent and productive conversation regarding AI and mutual sponsorship of each other’s resolutions on AI at the United Nations General Assembly, the two leaders emphasized the necessity of addressing the hazards associated with AI systems, enhancing AI safety and international collaboration, and promoting AI for the benefit of all,” the White House stated.
According to the White House, “The leaders agreed on the importance of retaining human oversight over the decision to deploy nuclear weapons. They also highlighted the need for careful consideration of potential risks and the responsible development of military AI technology.” Regarding Taiwan, President Biden reaffirmed that the United States’ one-China policy remains consistent, guided by the Taiwan Relations Act, the three Joint Communiqués, and the Six Assurances.
He reiterated that the United States opposes any unilateral alterations to the status quo from either party and expects cross-Strait differences to be resolved through peaceful means, asserting that the world has a vested interest in peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait. Biden called for an end to destabilizing military activities by the PRC around Taiwan.
Expanding on previous meetings in Bali and Woodside, the two leaders emphasized the significance of effectively managing the competitive aspects of their relationship, preventing conflict, sustaining open communication, cooperating in mutual interests, upholding the UN Charter, and ensuring that all nations treat each other with respect while finding ways to coexist peacefully. Both leaders stressed the importance of maintaining a strategic communication channel for responsibly managing their relationship and advocated for the ongoing use of diplomatic, military, law enforcement, commercial, and financial avenues.
