Surinder Choudhary, the head of the National Conference, moved the motion on behalf of the government, urging the federal government to start a conversation with the elected officials of J&K in order to restore special status and constitutional safeguards.
It placed a strong emphasis on preserving both the genuine aspirations of the people of J&K and national unity. Sunil Sharma, the BJP’s leader of the opposition, was adamantly against the action and questioned the shift in day-to-day operations.
Despite complaints from the BJP, the motion was passed with the support of PDP lawmakers, independent MLAs, and Peoples Conference President Sajjad Lone. The resolution was presented to a vote by Speaker Abdur Rahim Rather, and a majority of people approved it.
Due to the BJP’s persistent protests, the meeting had to be adjourned for 15 minutes. This comes after J&K’s special status was revoked by the Center on August 5, 2019, splitting the state into J&K and Ladakh, two Union Territories.
In its manifesto, the National Conference pledged to strive for the restoration of statehood and special status. The Legislative Assembly reaffirms the significance of the special status.
