Wayne Rooney and Plymouth Argyle have decided to go their separate ways immediately. Rooney, who became the head coach in May, is leaving because the team is at the bottom of the Championship league, four points away from safety after 23 games. Recently, they lost 2-0 to Oxford and 4-0 to Coventry.
On the Plymouth website, Rooney thanked the club’s board, especially Simon Hallett and Neil Dewsnip, for their support. He also thanked the staff, players, and fans for their efforts and support during his time as head coach. Rooney mentioned that he will always have fond memories of the games at Home Park and gave a special thanks to his coaching staff, including Kevin Nancekivell, Simon Ireland, Darryl Flahavan, and Mike Phelan.
Rooney said Plymouth Argyle will always be special to him, and he will continue to follow their results.
For now, first-team coach Kevin Nancekivell and club captain Joe Edwards will lead the team for their New Yearβs Day game against Bristol City.
The club’s statement confirmed that Wayne Rooney, along with assistant head coach Mike Phelan and first-team coach Simon Ireland, are leaving. They thanked Rooney and his team for their hard work and wished them well. The club will announce new management updates soon.
